Charts Don’t Lie: September 14

Weekly review of the Hip-Hop and R&B sales/charts.

This week we welcome Jeezy onto the Billboard 200, with his Seen It Allalbum debuting successfully at #2. He wasn't able to trump the pop-power that is Maroon 5, nonetheless he did move more than projected. The album was projected to move 90k-100k opening week, but it managed to top the 100k mark with 121,000 copies sold. Although his last album moved almost twice, with 231,000 copies sold opening week, it happens to be a higher debut thanTM:103 Hustlerz Ambition. Meanwhile, we're waiting for both Jhene Aiko(Souled Out) and Lecrae (Anomaly) to make their Billboard 200 debuts. As we reported on earlier in the week, it's looking like Jhene will move slightly less copies than Lecrae, however, if her Sailed Out EP is any indication, Jhene will be holding on to a chart position in the long run. It'll be a close race between the two artists either way, as Souled Out is projected to move 70-75k whileAnomaly is projected to move 75-80k-- the winner in said race will likely top the Billboard 200 with a #1 debut. Check back next week to find out where either project stands.

1)         Jeezy—  Seen It All: The Autobiography: Jeezy’s new album topped the charts this past week, although it wasn’t able to outsell Maroon 5 for a #1 debut. Nonetheless, #2 ain’t so bad. It’s a higher debut than his last album,TM:103 Hustlerz Ambition, which debuted at #3 in 2011. Seen It All moved over 100k opening week, with 121,000 copies sold.

2)         Wiz Khalifa—Blacc Hollywood: Wiz Khalifa begins his descent down the Billboard 200. This week Blacc Hollywood fell four spots, arriving at #10. The album sold 20,000 units within its third week, bringing up total sales to 141,000.

3)         Iggy Azalea—The New Classic: With news of an alleged sex tape earlier in the week, Iggy is sure to see a spike in her sales shortly, not that she really needs the help. This week she fell only two spots, down to #18. The New Classic moved another 11,373 units, with total sales of 334,522.

4)          Beyonce— Beyonce: We saw Beyonce sore back up the charts to #14 last week. The spike in sales may be short-lived, as this week she drops down again to #34. That’s still nothing to shake your head at, as she’s been charting for 39 weeks now. The singer sold 7,261 units this week, and brought her grand tally to 2,062,614.

5)         Trey Songz— Trigga: Trey Songz drops to #41 this week after charting for 10 weeks. Trigga managed to sell another 6,235 copies, while his total sales have climbed to 236,289.

6)         Eminem— The Marshall Mathers LP 2: Eminem sees a slight spike this week as his album climbs to #47 from #51 last week. MMLP2  continues to move off shelves, with 5,281 units sold this week. His total sales, after charting for 44 weeks, are 2,195,274.

7)         August Alsina— Testimony: R’n’b newcomer August Alsina has quickly made a name for himself within the genre. His album Testimony has also been a chart mainstay, although it dropped off to #71 last week. This week it’s back up at #51, selling 4,844 copies. Total sales are currently 197,607.

8)        John Legend— Love In The Future: Alsina’s fellow r’n’b artist John Legend finds himself a few spots below Alsina. The G.O.O.D. singe rose up this week from #63 to #54, after charting for 53 weeks. Legend moved 4,599 copies of his album, and brought his total sales to 615,760.

9)        Drake—Nothing Was The Same: Drake hasn’t left us just yet. With a new album, Views From The 6, on the way, NWTS rises back up the charts to #57 this week. The LP sold 4,440 copies this week, while total sales have reached 1,624,308.

Pharrell's album G I R L remains stagnant this week at #64 on the charts. Meanwhile, Michael Jackson's Xscapedropped a few spots to #66. Further down we find Childish Gambino's Because The Internet at #75, after charting for 39 weeks. G-Eazy's These Things Happen rose up one spot this week to #86. Finally, Ca$h Out's new albumLet's Get It makes a steep drop from #43 (where it debuted at last week) to #89.

Frank Ocean's Dad Is Suing Russell Simmons For $142 Million

Frank Ocean's dad is suing Russell Simmons' Global Grind over his negative portrayal on the website.

Frank Ocean's father hasn't been a part of the R&B singer's life since he was five years old, but he feels his reputation as a father has been wrongly tarnished, and he's seeking $142 million in compensation.

Ocean's dad, otherwise known as Calvin Cooksey is targeting Russell Simmons' Global Grind in particular, claiming the site has posted lies about him, as well as strangely taking them to task for never using his real name.

According to Cooksey, Ocean's "Money Grubbing mother" prevented him from fulfilling his role as a parent, which he feels GG failed to mention. The "singer, writer and inventor" as he describes himself is looking for $142 million from Simmons, to make up for "loss of future income".

Neither Simmons or Ocean have commented on the suit so far. 

Big Sean Was Still With Naya Rivera When He Recorded "I Don't Fuck With You"

Big Sean explains how his breakup anthem, "I Don't Fuck With You" came together.

Big Sean surprised fans with four new tracks earlier this week, and so far the favorite among the bunch is the DJ Mustard, Kanye West, and DJ Dahi-produced, "I Don't Fuck With You". Coming off of a high profile break up with Glee star Naya Rivera recently, the ex-skewering track seemed to have the actress in its crosshairs, but Sean revealed to MTV it was actually written while they were together, well, most of it was.

"Everybody got someone that they feel like that about, and if not, you felt like that at a time in your life," said the newly signed Roc Nation rapper, explaining that he wasn't in a particularly negative mindset at the time.

"I wasn't angry. I actually wrote that while I was in a relationship. I wasn't bitter", he revealed, before admitting that he added a few lines when things went south. "Obviously after a few things went down I went back and changed a couple words, but mainly the song was already there. It's funny

 how thingsplay out, but that song is an anthem."

Sean also explained the beat had more man power behind it then the production credits suggest. "Kanye and Mustard collabed on the beat with DJ Dahi, and Key Wane brought the sample to the table. It was a big team effort."

Big Sean Clarifies Roc Nation Deal, Says "I've Been Affecting Culture Since I Came Out"

"Whether you like it or hate it it's been a part of culture," Big Sean says of some of his catchphrases and fashion sense. "That's what I'm shooting for."

After announcing that he’d signed to Roc Nation for a management deal, Big Sean released four new songs yesterday through his website. Speaking with Jinx ofComplex News, Sean clarified his deal with Roc Nation, explained how he feels he’s “been affecting culture” since his debut, and detailed his charitable work with children in Detroit.

Speaking about the Roc Nation announcement, Sean said that the venture is an umbrella for business services

“It’s really more than management I feel like,” he said. “It’s like an umbrella. It’s like a family over there. I’ve had management before but it’s just on a whole other level. And people are really personally involved, Hov is really personally involved and ‘Ye of course, that’s the bro right there. It’s just kind of more like the business side of things, Roc Nation, that’s my umbrella...It’s just like a family and I’m still with ‘Ye. ‘Ye was the one that was like, ‘I think you should incorporate them and use these guys.’ He uses them too. It was a family thing.”

Reiterating that the Roc Nation deal doesn’t represent a step away from G.O.O.D. Music, Sean hinted that he’ll never leave the label.

“I guess me and ‘Ye are G.O.O.D. Music but it’s other people on G.O.O.D. Music too,” he said of his and Kanye West’s being the only G.O.O.D. Music signees working with Roc Nation. “I know when we announced we were doing business with Roc Nation people were like, ‘You left Kanye?’ That would be the dumbest thing ever. Just to clarify that, it’s all fam...on G.O.O.D. Music, on the forefront, for life. I’m repping that.”

During the interview the Hall Of Fame rapper also spoke about his progression as an artist and explained how he thinks he’s continually affecting the culture at large.

“I always just wanna try different things,” he said. “I never wanna try and do the same thing again. I feel like that’s the wackest thing as an artist. Detroit was something different, Hall of Fame was something different than Detroit. The next thing I do is gonna be completely different than the last thing I did. Always. I think that’s great. I think that’s the sign of a bright future, somebody who isn’t afraid and somebody who wants to change the game. That’s what I wanna do. People can say what they wanna say but I’ve been affecting culture ever since I came out, and that’s just fucking facts man. Helping bring Adidas back to the forefront when they signed me. I feel like bringing TI$A. I was the first person wearing POW chains man. Me and ‘Ye got the samples together. I feel like, ‘swerve’ man. I feel like ‘ho shut the fuck up.’ I’m not saying this in a cocky way in anyway. I’m just saying my presence has been felt in culture: ‘boy,’ ‘I do it.’ Whether you like it or hate it it’s been a part of culture. That’s what I’m shooting for. I’m gonna keep going and I’m gonna keep doing what I wanna do and taking chances and just being artistic with it.”

Speaking about his newly released singles, which feature production from the likes of 

Kanye West

, DJ Dahi, and DJ Mustard, the Detroit artist said, “they’re slappers.”

“I’m going for blood man,” he said. “I feel like Rap music, people are hungry for Rap right now. I feel like this was one of the worst years as far as releases of Rap, as far as the amount of Rap that was released. We had good, good stuff but it wasn’t that much stuff. My point is there’s a lot of people but it wasn’t [consecutive releases] like how it usually is. I think everybody has been taking their time with their craft, perfecting it. I know I have been and I’m sure everybody has been.”

Remaining hush on his plans for a new album, Sean instead said he’s staying busy with community work in his native Detroit.

“Helping the people out in Detroit,” he said, speaking about his recent schedule. “You know my foundation, I been helping the kids out a lot there. We just been giving back to the city a lot. So shout out to everybody who’s been helping that. Shout out to my Mom for instilling me to be charitable growing up and really enforcing me to make a charity now. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done so I appreciate her for that. And you know, new tours, new music, new all of that coming.”

Kanye West Gives Fan With Prosthetic Leg A Pass To Remain Seated During His Show

Kanye West stopped a show in Sydney, Australia when he noticed a few fans were seated. After realizing those in question were either injured or disabled, he continued performing.

Kanye West looks for maximum crowd participation at his shows, recently calling for moshpits at his Made In America festival performance. During a concert in Sydney, Australia, Ye was looking for a similar level of engagement, stopping the show when he noticed a few fans weren't standing during the triumphant, "Good Life".

"I can't do this song if there's anybody in here sitting down," he said, before half-jokingly saying "Unless you're handicapped... I need you to pull out your handicapped parking slip right now."

Turns out, the fans who weren't standing had good reason not to be, with one reportedly using a wheelchair, while another held up a prosthetic leg (of which you can see a photo in the gallery above). 

Ye was totally cool to continue once he knew they had a valid excuse for taking a seat, and launched right back into more music.

Karen Civil Discusses Oprah Comparisons

Karen Civil says she's "humbled" by comparisons to Oprah Winfrey.

Karen Civil has been a name in Hip Hop music business for a while now and is someone who has had much experience particularly representing artists and brands.

Recently talking with The Source, Civil spoke on recent comparisons she has been fielding from magazines to Oprah Winfrey. She says she's humbled by such mentions.

"I’m not gonna lie… those are hard shoes to fill," Karen Civil said. "When you think Oprah you don't think pretty, or vanity. You think Oprah. One woman who is powerful and who does it all. No boundaries. So, yes - it is humbling, and empowering, because I don’t want to be seen as a women or for my looks first. I want to be 'She's living her purpose and she’s getting it done.' My works and passion for it is what you continue to see first."

Now representing Nipsey Hussle, Civil also spoke about her client and also Pharrell's ability to do crossover songs.

"Nipsey is def doing his thing especially with his most recent #Crenshaw $100 release," she said when asked about Nipsey and artists who are able to blur the lines between musical genres. "Pharrell will also continue to be an incredible artist who can go from singing 'Happy' to then go sing 'Move That Dope.'”

"See the thing about Kanye is…he goes off on the very things that has helped create his wive's empire," Civil says. "So it's, 'I don't want any this or that,' but then his music ends up in a commercial. We have come to terms that Kanye is Kanye...Passionate person that doesn’t fit the norm mold. Respect to him."
